Depending on your project you will want to make sure you're using the right grit of sand paper.

Ultra Coarse Grit is best used for fast leveling, shaping, extra heavy removal and stripping during paint refinishing, deck surface prep and reconditioning, floor refinishing, and project construction. 

Course Grit Is best used for surface leveling and heavy stock/paint removal, such as: paint refinishing, deck surface prep and reconditioning, floor refinishing, and project construction. 

Medium Grit is best used for moderate stock removal, such as: paint refinishing, deck surface prep and reconditioning, floor refinishing, and project construction. 

Fine Grit is best used for removing minor imperfections and initial sanding between paint/stain coats.

Ultra Fine Grit is best used for final sanding and surface preparation for stain/varnish.
