    Solid Hardwood Flooring

Solid hardwood flooring is cut from a single species of wood and has been used in homes for centuries. For example, a solid maple floor doesn’t just contain a top layer of maple, it is one solid plank of pure maple, from top to bottom. Solid hardwood can be pre-finished with protective layers (such as textured matte vs. shiny) in the factory, or sold raw and coated on-site. If you’re not sure about which colour you need, we’re happy to supply free, take-home flooring samples.

The main advantage of solid hardwood its lifetime usability because it can always be sanded down and refinished without reaching a layer that is different than the wood species on top. TimberTown sells solid hardwood that is responsibly harvested and made in Canada.

What are the grades of solid hardwood?

We offer three grades of solid planks, which vary based on the natural imperfections in the wood itself.

    • Select & Better: Includes mineral streaks, pin knots, and nuanced colour variations.
    • Builder: Includes character marks, colour variation, mineral streaks, pin knots, small filled knots, and micro cracks.
    • Advantage: Includes significantly more colour and grain variations than what is typically found in Builder Grade.
    • Tavern: Includes open knots and defects, colour variation, micro cracks, mineral streaks, pin knots, and board lengths as short as 8”.

Is solid wood better than engineered?

Solid hardwood offers the advantage of being able to be refinished (and stained) many times over the course of its lifespan because it is one solid wood species, top to bottom. In an engineered hardwood, the desired species only appears within the top layer, so the ability to refinish will depend on the thickness of this top layer. On the other hand, some solid hardwoods can warp, meaning they may need to be sanded flat and refinished, while engineered wood is usually designed to prevent warping.  Solid wood floors usually perform best with narrower planks.

How much does it cost to install 1000 sq ft of hardwood floor?

For pre-finished hardwood, plan on about $3.50 per square foot for a professional installer. So approximately $3500 for 1000 square feet.

Which solid wood is best for flooring?

For the Alberta climate, Red Oak and Maple perform best for solid hardwood floors. These are responsibly harvested and made in Canada.
